Ten Epic Surf Shots From Spain’s Mediterranean Coast

It’s well know that Spain’s Mediterranean coast holds a whole host of delights.

There’s Barcelona, with its excellent architecture and world class nightlife, Valencia, known for its great food and artistic and cultural hot spots and of course Benidorm, home of the over indulgent all inclusive package holiday.

What is less well known however, is just how good the surf down that way can get, if you know where to look.

One man who certainly does is Valencian surfer and photographer Alex Postigo, who boasts an amazing portfolio of work, both from along his native coastline and further afield. We recently hit him up to show us some of his favourite images from the Med, and tell us a little more about himself and the surf scene there:

“After studying Graphic Design with photography I realised that my happy place was in the sea, since I grew up by it I always felt a strong connection with its energy.

“I enjoy transmitting this passion to people who are not lucky enough to see the ocean from this perspective.
“I normally shoot mini-slab like waves due to the lack of swell that hits mediterranean shores. This has been my way of adapting to this environment. However, when the waves fire i’m in the water from sun up to sundown. I like the sea here because it has taught me to appreciate days like these, although to be fair, I enjoy going out searching for waves in oceans when the opportunity arises.
“There isn’t a big surf culture here, although in the last few years surfing has become more popular as mainstream media has brought it out to the public and some beaches can become crowded during weekends. However, there is no lack of skill amongst some of the keener locals.”
So this year was one of the coldest years on record. Snows here are so rare that the coincidence of the event to have that swell was historic. Manu Colomina (@colominamanu) picks his line on a solid autumn day. Juan Carlos, local from Javea, as happy as we´ve ever seen him after his solo session. Fran Doce (@seaphrodite) sneaks under the hood in Valencia´s backyard. This break is probably the most iconic waves in the area. When the right conditions coincide it feels like you are somewhere else in the world.Jose Postigo (josepostigo) enjoying one of the rare days that the mediterranean surprises us with.As there are no tides in the med, when the waves are good, they are good all day.
