An Aerial View Of The Best Novelty Wave In America

We’re sure you know of Sandspit by now – It’s that amazing novelty wave in Santa Barbara which produced that viral clip of that ridiculously long keg a few years back. Well, the freak was firing over last weekend’s storm swell in California.

This drone footage from the weekend provides a unique perspective on the wave’s weird geographical dynamic, as well as featuring all the best of the barrels and brown backwash it threw up.

The wave was actually created by the good folk of the US Army Corps

Sandspit is renowned for getting very crowded and therefore pretty dangerous. The wave was actually created by the good folk of the US Army Corps who built a breakwater to protect Santa Barbara harbour.

The wave breaks quickly into an extremely shallow sand bottom, where coming up short on the take off could see you smashing into the harbour wall or being spat out the back by the backwash. However long drainers await those who can make the tricky first section and successfully call off any shoulder hoppers.
