Aussie Cops Reprimanded After Using Counter-Terrorism Boat To Go Surfing

Last week two police officers from Victoria, Australia reportedly used a $650,000 counter-terrorism boat to reach a remote surf spot, accessible only by water craft.

After completing a training exercise nearby last Thursday, the pair snuck off in the vessel and headed for ‘Qurras’, an epic left hander that breaks a few hundred metres offshore. The boat in question was a rigid-hulled inflatable dingy, which is usually used for high-profile counter-terrorism exercises.

As well as the risks associated with ‘borrowing’ a 650k boat off the state, once at the break there is plenty to contend with. Super strong rip currents, sharks, angry locals and surprisingly, crowds, who reportedly appear on boats from all directions when the wave is on, make up just some of the inherent hazards.

The two Water Police officers involved are believed to be a sergeant and a senior constable. The sergeant is known to be a keen surfer, and  previously won the Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games.

Whilst the officers were off-duty at the time, there are reports that they have been disciplined, with an official statement by a Victoria Police spokesman saying on Wednesday that the Professional Standards Command was aware of the allegations and that they would be investigating them.
