Aussie Novelty River Wave Lights Up After Destructive Cyclone Debbie

We love a good novelty wave here at WL HQ, especially those little corners that only light up once in a blue moon after some sort of big meteorological event.

We love ’em even more when the wave is actually good quality, as is this case with Tweed River, which has been putting a smile on some faces in Aus after grim times in the wake of the cyclone.

Debbie tore her way through the East of Australia at the tail end of last week and her impacts are still very much being felt. While the majority of what she’s left behind is resoundingly negative, high water, combined with a super rarely angled south-east swell did manage to bring a silver lining to a few, as the chocolate brown right-hander at the mouth of the sharky Tweed River, which lies just south of Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast, lit up yesterday.

Never shy of the odd ear infection, or debilitating bacterial disease, a dozen or so surfers took to the river with enthusiasm and vigour, while a team of photographers watched on. “The Tweed River was incredible today, sick barrels, I went for a shoot with Jackson Coffey, Korbin Hutchings, Reef Doig, and Dru Adler,” photog Juan Carlos Medina told Stab.

“This wave in the Tweed River gets good every 10 years,” he added.

 

As far as Novelty waves go this one is up there. Pretty sure Aqua Ear sales have spiked at all the local pharmacies.
