Big Wave Plastic Ocean Defender – Garrett McNamara

Over the past few days we have been fortunate enough to get to know Garrett McNamara in Ericeira and Lisbon, while attending the Surf & Web Summit.

He is a man with legendary status for pushing boundaries of big wave surfing and famously held the world record for biggest wave ever surfed for over 7 years. It was only this year that he officially passed the baton to another big wave surfer and friend, Rodrigo Koxa, who pipped him by 2 foot on a 80ft beast at Nazare.

Beyond surfing waves that look more like mountains, Garrett is infectiously enthusiastic about everything around him and is leading the charge on protecting our ocean from the scourge that is plastic. Here is a clip he made with his family highlighting how we can all do our bit. His son Barrel (what a name!) comes across as a little dude and will no doubt be inspired by his dad’s approach to life!
