The British Women Leading The Charge: Emily Currie

Here’s the third in our series of interviews chronicling the British women leading the charge, this time featuring Bude based multiple-craft master Emily Currie.

Currie has already achieved a 9th and 4th in the short boarding World Qualifying Series and the Long Boarding world tour respectively in 2017, building momentum for a solid finish in each category in the Euro league tables.

The second of these results occurred at the Primavera Surf Fest, located in Caparica, Portugal. We caught up with her soon after the event wrapped, as she made her way to Spain, to ask her about her winter, and her plans for the year ahead.

WL: What have you been doing over the winter to stay on your game?

EC: I’ve stayed at home for the majority of the winter, apart from the odd training trip/competition, but I have been training hard with my personal trainer, and putting the hours in the water too, preparing for the upcoming season.

WL: What’s the difference between competing in the UK and in Europe?

EC: The main difference is the amount of competition and quality of it, the level is so high in Europe at the moment, and it’s great to get out here on the QS, to put yourselves against the best. In the main European season, a lot of people from Australia and the US come over too, as it’s like a mini circuit, so you get to compete against a really high level. You always have to be on top of your game and surf smart to be making heats.

WL: What are your plans for the rest of the year?

EC: I’m really looking forward to the rest of the year, I’m going to compete in all of the UK competitions, as well as all of the European QS’s and Longboard QS’s. My major goals for this year are working on my seeding in the QS, as I haven’t had a full year on the European circuit yet, so I want to get a full year in this year, to improve my seeding, to allow myself to qualify for the 6* events, further afield. And in the longboard QS, I’d love to put myself in a good position for a shot to qualify for the 2018 WSL world longboard tour.
