BUCS 2014 Surf Championships weekend roundup

What a weekend! The BUCS 2014 Surf Championships are over, but we hope that the memories will last a lifetime (or at least until next years championships!)

Mum ‘s on hand to capture Team FXU

Congratulations to everyone who competed, with 408 competitors it was our largest Surf Championships ever, securing our position as the largest surf competition in Europe – lets make next year even bigger and keep closing the gap on the US Open! The Surf Village was also buzzing with over 900 people making the most of the incredible accommodation offer, and having an awesome time on the dance floor with Kissy Sell Out!

The conditions were challenging for all of the surfers this year, with strong winds making the surf messy, and the paddle out arm burning. This didn’t stop the final being fiercely competitive with the 4 surfers in the men’s and women’s putting on a great show!  Rhys Poulton of Swansea took the gold in the men’s competition; an outrageous inside turn earning him gold against FXU’s Chris Schnitzer, a regular competitor on the UK Pro Surf tour. In the women’s event, Gabi Rowe retained the trophy for FXU, beating another of last years finalists Jessica Henry, who took silver for the University of St Mark and St Johns. The team event was also hotly contested, going right to the wire and only being decided by the competitors placings in the finals.  Rhys and Gabi’s gold medal winning performances ensured that Swansea and FXU were packing up their vans with not just boards and wetsuits, but silverware as well.

Here are the results from the individual competition

A full round up will be in the new Wavelength on the shelves 31st October.
