In Conversation With Dane Reynolds; Fatherhood, Shifting Identities & Hindsight

As the Sunset Sons made their way onto the main stage on the Saturday, we grabbed a sit down with Dane Reynolds to talk about fatherhood, his reflections on his time on tour and his ever shifting sense of identity.

What are you up to here in the Basque country?

A few years back Vans invited me to Tofino for the Duct Tape and I shaped some boards and everyone was really pumped on riding them, so they asked me to come back this year and I was stoked to get out of town and come and make two boards for this.

Is shaping a new passion for you?

No, probably about five years ago I was really into it and making a couple of boards a week almost. But now I’ve got three young kids, and a new company and I surf when I can, so it’s kind of fallen by the wayside, but when Vans asked for some boards it was a good opportunity to get back in the bay.

I’m impressed that despite having two babies, a toddler, a company and pro surfing career you and your wife Courtney still find time to run an instagram for your dog!

(Laughs). That’s the one thing that doesn’t suffer, she’s very dedicated and she’s very good at it. It’s funny.

The last time I interviewed you was at the 2015 Quik Pro and I asked how come you’d decided to compete and you told me you were obligated by sponsors to be there. You definitely seem to be having more fun here, but is there any part of you that misses competing on the tour?

In the last ten months I’ve been home because of the kids, it just didn’t really seem feasible to travel for surfing and it was winter time in California, so I was kind of just waiting for it to turn on, but it never did. After that long of just being at home and surfing pretty minimally, I’m getting stir crazy for a surf trip, but I definitely don’t really miss the competitive scene.
