Fred (Morias) possessed none of the simmering intensity in his day to day interactions you see from so many with his competitive tenacity and Ryan presented a whole host of contradictions to the neat pigeon holes into which professional surfers are shoe-horned.

When not travelling the world, receiving CT tailored coaching on the minutia of his surfing and doing strength training, Ryan spends his time hanging at home with his room mate, and according to him, biggest influence, Craig Anderson.

In doing so he straddles two seemingly contradictory approaches to the sport of surfing, which each define themselves, at least in part, with their apparent disdain for the other. So goes the narrative; you’re either that super-8, soulful free surf guy, or the ultra competitive, dead-lifting jock and supposedly, each think the other is ruining surfing.

However Ryan not only claims this rivalry narrative doesn’t hold much truth, away from online comment sections, populated by pseudonymed and perpetually angry commentators, but is also a walking testimony that a hybrid of these two seemingly contrasting schools could well be the best approach.”
