Join Ticket to Ride for a tailor made cycling adventure through the Basque country surfing at the best spots along the way.

This surf and cycle tour starts in the thick of the pine trees in south west France, picking up the spiritual path of the Camino De Santiago, taking you to untouched corners of your own pedalling paradise.

The route is challenging, but achievable by anyone with a good level of general fitness. The waves can be the best in Europe. The perfect holiday for the adventure enthusiast.

Itinerary

You will cycle to each spot carrying only daily supplies. The Ticket to Ride support vehicle will carry all camping equipment, surfboards and baggage and will await us at each camp every evening with cold beers and a warm meal.

The accommodation will be set up for you every day upon your arrival to the camp site. The private tents are spacious and comfortable, with a top of the range camp bed, duvet and pillow, as well as a belongings box and reading lamp.

All your meals will be made and prepared by the experienced Ticket to Ride team to make sure you have plenty of energy for the trip, including one evening meal out in Hossegor and a celebratory meal in Bilbao Old Town.

Waves

This region is blessed with a coastline that faces all directions and is made up of numerous spots breaking over a variety of reef and sand bottom setups.

Lacanau boasts as consistent surf as the famous beaches further south and handles size better due to the man made jetties.

Biscarosse Plage is another popular break for Bordeaux-based surfers with a variety of waves ranging from barreling high tide shorebreaks to long low tide walls.

Mimizan Plage is true gem as it can be as good as the breaks in Seignosse and Hossegor but is often overlooked as it is close enough for most people to go surf them instead.

Seignosse has a variety of waves stretching up and down the loosely designated that can be great for beginners on the right tide and swell, yet world class in differing conditions.

Hossegor is the surfing capital of Europe, with a great scene to accompany it’s reputation.

San Sebastian, has Playa Zurriola is practically in San Sebastian town centre and picks up all swell going. A surf here, followed by a stroll into town for the world’s best pinchos (tapas) is great experience.

Or there is Zarautz close by which is very a consistent, good quality, beachbreak that doesn’t need much swell to work.

Playa de Karraspio in Pais Vasco is a spot close to Lekeitio that we will check. It is a sheltered beach break, which is good if you are hiding from large swell, with a variety of different waves breaking into the beautiful bay.

Mundaka is Spain’s jewel of the crown, a seriously impressive left hander that is not for the faint hearted. Always worth checking out.

Sopelana is the beach closest to Bilbao and is a very consistent beachbreak with several peaks.

Team

You will have a dedicated team supporting your journey the whole way. Max Hepworth-Povey and William Jessup will be your cycle and surf guides for the duration.

They are also quite well known for  spinning damn good yarns around a camp fire. You can read about how this trip was inspired from their gourmet booze cruise from Newquay to Santander here.

There will also be a chef, who’s sole role is to ensure that you are nourished and satisfied on the food front. As well as a camp manager who will get the evening’s camp site ready and will be driving the support vehicle.

They are even going to wash your lycra every evening so you’re getting into fresh clothes in the morning!
