WATCH: A Giant Drone Towing A Hydro Foil

While the vast majority of surfers are content practising the sport of kings as it has been done for thousands of years, a small contingent are always on the look out for new ways to change up the simple act of wave riding.

Enter Drone hydro foiling- the newest novelty taking social media by storm (17 impressed people and counting). We’ve reported on drone tow surfing before, musing that it could perhaps one day transform the world of big wave tow surfing, however we’re struggling to see what the addition of a hydro foil brings to the table.

When coupled with a foil, the drone’s basically a very expensive, noisey kite, controlled not by the person on the other end of the rope, but some sap on land, who probably doesn’t even know which direction you want to go in. There’s a few benefits; the ability to have a dropped rope popped back into your hands for example and the eradication of the need for ungainly foil board pop-ups. Overall though our verdict is that it’s a very expensive solution to a problem that barely existed and although Branson might get one, we can’t see it catching on any time soon.

We are ready to change our minds though if and when the apparatus is used to whip someone into 60 foot jaws.

Stay tuned.
