The really amazing thing about Filipe’s free surf clips is they make you realise just how close to 100% Filipe surfs in his heats. It’s a common criticism of the WSL comp format that it requires you to surf at 80%, minimise risk and go to safety turns. And indeed a clip of John John or Julian free surfing would indicate as much. But not Felipe, by far the best airs, combos and carve’s we’ve ever seen from him have been in a rashy, and to me that what makes him one of the most exciting surfers in the world right now.
