A couple weekends ago, we threw out an open invite to – well – anyone, to come join an Expression Session put on by Newquay Boardriders and supported by YETI.

The heats filled rapidly, literally within moments of the sign up launching. Four heats, running back-to-back, after Surfing England’s U16 and U18 national championships. The swell was there, classically high tide Fistral made for a couple solid sets – and a relentless rip running from east to west down the beach.

Still, it was a bit of a clinic out there. “Seemed to change all the time,” said current English champ Belle Betteridge, who threw a couple of hammers out there. “But fun, always fun.”

Later on in the day, Alan Stokes was punting into the flats as the tide drew back a bit. “That’s Fistral,” he said. “Able to do whatever you like. Was a sick expression session, everyone was feeling it.”

Now, the winner of the Expression Session is actually going to be somewhat of a world’s first (we think, but heck, we’re claiming it!). One wave from each participant will be shown live at the Wavelength UK Surfer Awards on July 24th, and you, the attendees at the awards – will vote who you want to win. We’ll display a QR code on the big screen on stage, so come with your phones charged! One vote, one winner, one grand prize. If the tech has a hissy-fit, then we’ll resort to the tried-and-tested cheer-o-metre. We love a good hoot.
