Day 1 at the J-Bay Open

Wavelength

11th July 2014

Since 1981

Jbay got its game face on for the first day of the re-instated Jbay Open, providing its signature long right handers for the worlds best to get stuck into.

Almost all of the top seeds breezed through the first round, with a few exceptions. Joel Parkinson surfed well but was just pipped by an in form Kai Otton and World number one Medina, who was clashing horribly in his yellow singlet and orange suit, looked a little shaky on his feet in the first round, falling to Adam Melling. Both however redeemed themselves in elimination Round 2, with Medina taking out local wild card Dylan Lightfoot, and Parko securing a victory over Brett Simpson.

Jordy surfed just like he did in the ‘Jordy and his beloved J-bay’ edit that Oneil dropped yesterday and consequently earned himself a whopping 19.80 heat total. There’s no point in me waxing lyrical about how beautifully he was surfing, as I’d never be able to do it justice, so best to just go check it out for yourself here.

Aritz too, who has been having a pretty bad year on tour so far, had an absolute blinder, scoring a 9.03 for one of the best barrels of the day and two big smacks through the lip.

There’s no competition today and its forecast to be small for the next few days, but when it does start up again, you can follow us on twitter for regular updates.
