Listen: Taz Knight’s Mullaghmore Mullering

Devonshire gnarl enthusiast Taz Knight is known for his dedication to some of the heaviest slabs and reefs that break around the British Isles and beyond.

One such frightful waveform is the Irish lefthander known as Mullaghmore, which this winter has lit up under the rare calmer atmospheric conditions between a series of raucous Atlantic named storm systems.

The very next session after Tom Lowe’s memorable paddle bomb in February, Taz took a particularly nasty wipeout that he was good enough to recount to Wavelength Editor Luke Gartside in typical understated fashion. Here’s what he had to  say:

“That was the worst wipeout I’ve ever had at Mully, it was one of those ones that really throws you around and drags you deep.” ⁠

It was the second wave of the set, which are notoriously difficult at Mully as the water pushed down into the reef by the first comes bubbling back up, creating all these crazy boils.⁠

“My board got air as I was trying to bottom turn, which put me too high on the face and as the lip came over, I got slingshotted out and slammed down onto my chest. It knocked the wind out of me and rattled my head quite badly.” ⁠

“You can see it go black for a second as I get pushed down, then blue for a second as I get sucked back over and then black again as I go back down into the depths.⁠”

 

 

“After 20 seconds of getting thrown around, I finally managed to come up, but I didn’t even get a breath before that next wave smashed straight into me. Luckily, it was a little one and I resurfaced after a few seconds.⁠”

“My ears had perforated a bit and I’d hit my head, so my vision was just flipping in circles. Peter Conroy  came on the ski and tried to grab me but I was too disoriented to get to him, so he had to circle around and I had to take another wave on the head.” ⁠
