Local Crew Charge Sydney Slabs

At the end of last week, the world’s best surfers took to Snapper to warm up for the imminent start of the first WSL comp of the season, as a solid pre-comp groundswell graced Australia’s coastline.

500 miles up the coast, the slabs around Sydney too were enjoying the pulse, with a solid crew of local chargers on hand to paddle out and take advantage. The infamous slab at Shark Island hosted much of the action:

“The easterly swell hit Sydney on Friday of last week, with a southerly wind which made it 10-12 ft but too choppy.” explains local photographer Dan Bielich.

“Winds eased on Saturday, with the drop in swell to about 6-9 ft, with southwesterly winds. Sydney took off. Perfect barrels were everywhere, the beach breaks, the point, and the reef breaks were all pumping.”

“A few of the shots feature the slab at shark island, and the others are from a secluded reef break around Sydney.

“With the conditions aligning pretty well. The bravest surfers took on the reef beasts with no hesitation, whilst the rest of us watched by the sidelines.

“It was a crazy day of waves.” he summarised “And I can’t wait for the next pulse of waves.”
