The Spring Classic Surf Invitational will see the finest nose-riders and tail-sliders descend on Combesgate Beach, Woolacombe to go head to head for a two-day surf comp with a difference.

With Mystic recently announced as an official partner of the Spring Classic Surf Invitational, we caught up with young gun and team rider Malakai Hagley.

At a mere fifteen years old, Devon local Malakai is a line-up favourite, with his signature neon pink board ensuring that when a fluorescent arc of spray comes raining down, you know who the perp was!

1. What’s your current go-to board at the moment?

My current go-to board is my 5’5 Skin Pup Epoxi LKS squash tail; it’s ideal for catching plenty of waves on typical summer days, as well as generating lots of speed in all conditions.

2. If you could be surfing any wave in the world right now, where would it be and why?

Although I’ve never been there, Indo would be sick, because of the warm water and perfect glassy waves. Lots of barrels!

3. What’s the best part about growing up in Devon?

As a young surfer, growing up in Devon is great because of the variety of waves (different beach and points for different winds, swells and abilities). There is also a great crew of surfers in North Devon who are really friendly and help push young surfers like myself.

4. Have you got any exciting surf trips planned for the upcoming summer break?

I’m not heading anywhere this summer, however, I’ve got a of couple trips planned soon which I’m super excited about! Next month, I’m heading to Ferrol, Spain, for my first ever WSL Pro Junior comp which should be a great experience.

Just before the summer holidays, I’m also off to a training camp with Beau Bromham and the whole performance squad in North Portugal. I can’t wait to surf and train all day, hang out with my friends and see if I can get surfed out!

5. What board would you most like to be given to surf at the Spring Classic Surf Invitational?

I would love it if I got given a twin fin to ride, as they are super maneuverable and give lots of release in the pocket, especially on small days.
