With just three entries to go, we’re entering the final straight for our shortlisted entries for the Best British Barrel. So far we’ve had three bangers from Scotland, featuring Taz Knight, Noah Lane and Mark ‘Egor’ Harris and three from England, featuring Ritchie Mullins and Nic Von Rupp. Next up is one from the first ever tow session at Tens in 2009, featuring Matt Capel.

Matt Capel was born in the UK but moved to Aus when he was nine, before returning to Newquay in 2005. Matt spent the following few years living between Aus, Indo and the UK, utilising the time he spent on British shores hunting out heavy waves and competing on the UK pro surf tour.

This clip comes from the first ever tow session at Tens – a crazy Scottish slab discovered by Matt, Egor and Mitch Corbett. It features in Ross John’s epic 2010 British surf flick ‘Friction’. Here’s what Capel recounts of the session:

“I saw a chart and drove up there last minute with Egor, Mitch Corbett and the ski after having a rather large night in Wales after a BPSA event. None of us had ever surfed it so we were pretty frothing. That arvo was just pumping. No wind, pulsing swell and some hollow pits. Everyone got some bombs. When it’s that big it’s virtually impossible to paddle as the wave jacks up so much over the shallow reef. It was just us 3 out all day and was definitely a session to remember”
