Meet The Skipper Whose Boat Went Over The Falls At Giant Nias "When I watched the video of the boat I was crying, but I smiled too because I saw no-one got hurt" says the skipper of the boat the world watched get smashed at Nias. Watch his full analysis of the incident here:

Luke Gartside

1st August 2018

Last week, as a historic a swell battered Indo, a video went viral of a boat going over the falls at giant Nias.

In our original post we wondered aloud how the boat ended up in the lineup and asked what of the poor bloke who owns it? This morning, as it so often the case, we discovered the answers to our wonderings deep in the interweb, in the form of a facebook video, featuring the boats owner Timotius Wau.

Wau, who runs a surf camp and boat charters, begins by introducing himself as the owner of the boat, from inside his smashed up vessel which is washed up on the beach. He goes on to apologise to all the surfers in the lineup at the time for putting them at risk and describe how he learnt of the incident.

“I’m very happy, very glad no one get hurt.” he summarises. “If someone got hurt with the boat it’s gonna be very, very sad. A lot of my guys, a lot of my friends who stay with me, they tried to save the boat and push it away from the waves, but it didn’t work out because the sets coming. They get smashed and it’s not gonna be fun.”
