Newport Wedge Awakens; Massive Waves, Crazy Backwash

Ah, it feels like it’s been such a very long time since we’ve seen our old friend Newport Wedge properly show her teeth.

Last year saw an uncharacteristically quiet season at everyones favourite novelty wave, however by the looks of it this season has started with a bang, with several days of fun surf gracing Newport’s shores so far this Spring.

Saturday however was a slightly different story, with a big swell running, plenty of backwash and a mad crew, including JOB in attendance, there was carnage a-plenty. The following video features a taste of the action from up close and personal, with the full edit to follow soon.

‘The early morning high tide was creating a make or break back wash.’ described lensman Brent Weldon, who regularly films at the break. ‘If you made it over you could either have a huge backwash flare or a wave throwing you to the sand and breaking your surfboard. And Yes’ he continued ‘that all happened at least a few times. But it was easily one of the best days so far at The Wedge in 2017. I Took a few Beatings to get some of these shots but well worth it.’
