On Reflection Of Course We Should Not Be Surfing

Across Europe we are in lockdown. It is that simple.

We are all glued to our phones and it surely cannot have passed people by that this is serious. Beyond loss of earnings, long term economic impact we are collectively fighting against a massive loss of life. The unthinkable reality is that despite unprecedented efforts we are still nowhere near bringing this thing under control.

Our Italian friends are struggling to contain and cope with the outbreak. Most other European countries are tracking in the same direction so we would do well to listen to what we are being told is the right thing to do.

Stay at home to stop the spread of the Corona Virus

Living by the coast unable to go about our normal lives, it is only natural to question whether one form of daily exercise can include surfing. Last night we raised the question of whether we should go surfing and even within the Wavelength team opinion has been split on what the right thing is to do here.

My opinion and the general consensus of our audience in the last 20 hours is that we should absolutely not be going surfing even if you can see the line up from your kitchen window.

Surfing is the lifeblood of this publication and its loyal audience. What we are facing globally is the biggest challenge in our collective lifetime and we are simply being asked to stay at home. Surely we can find it in ourselves to do the right thing here.

When we stay at home, we minimise the risk, if we pull together we stand a chance of coming out of this nightmare as soon as possible.

The reasons not to go surfing far outweigh the reasons to ignore advice and jump in anyway.

The only solution that we are being given by medical professionals who are faced with taking on this pandemic on the front line is to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.

If you are not part of that solution, you make yourself part of the problem. It is as simple as that.

This is a time to conform, reflect and prepare for the good times that we all hope we can return to as soon as possible. In the meantime, our editors are beavering aways in their bedrooms to bring you some welcome distraction to the onslaught of what I think we would all call some pretty scary times.

Our subscriptions team have even come up with a stay at home special offer. Fulfilment is happening via a doorstep pick from the local postman and we are packing each box taking the utmost safety and care.

Stay safe, take this seriously, and we will surf another day.
