Visceral Ocean Images By Kyle Jenkinson

In a world of infinite scroll, more subtle and detailed work, where the beauty relies on an appreciation of  the detail can slip by, however, occasionally we stumble across a body of work that forces us to stop and really look. And that’s exactly what happened when we first spotted the sublime photography of Kyle Jenkinson.

Focussing on little fleeting moments of beauty, where the sun twinkles off a throwing lip or pastel colours reflect off a sheet glass face, Kyle’s images set out to capture the powerful aesthetic details that serve as a backdrop to our ocean playtime.

“Photography is like an extension of surfing for me.” he explained of his passion. “The things I would see and feel while surfing inspired me to take the camera out in the ocean instead of the board. And for a couple years there I got hooked and pretty much went searching for the biggest, most interesting and empty waves I could find to capture from the water.”

“Around sunrise and sunset I find brings out the true nature of the ocean so that’s pretty much the only time I shoot. I’m based on the east coast of Australia and all of my shots are from waves within a few hours drive north or south from home, although I’m keen to venture further abroad for some different scenery and water clarity.”

“Currently there’s more of a balance between my surfing and photography, but they both compliment each other really well. My surfing has improved because of the photography and vice versa. Anytime in the ocean is ok with me!”
