Back in July last year, Kelly Slater shattered his foot at J-bay, pulling into a closeout barrel.

The road to recovery has been a long one for the champ, who was already nursing a series of niggling injuries when this one occurred. He made a brief re-appearance on tour for Pipe and the test event at his wave pool, but has sat out every other major event since last summer. A few days ago he caught up with the commentary team at Bells, telling them that while he can surf, he’s not at the level he needs to be. ‘It’s getting there though’ he said.

Late last month, a video of him surfing the north shore surfaced and although he’s ripping, he does look like he’s still nursing his foot.
