London Surf / Film Festival Presents: A Very Special Evening of Surf Cinema

Tuesday 22^nd July London Surf / Film Festival is stoked to present a very special evening of surf cinema that celebrates waveriding’s rich heritage and a shines a fresh light on some of its most compelling cultural icons.

The evening brings together a special big screen showing of Andrew Kidman’s groundbreaking ‘Litmus’, an era defining film that changed the way we thought about surfing forever and the world premiere of ‘The Ripple Effect’ – a four part project directed by award-winning filmmaker Peter Hamblin. Combining deft story-telling with slick editing and visual wizardry ‘The Ripple Effect’ provides a wry and insightful look at four of surfing’s defining moments and the characters that shaped them, presented on the night by director Peter Hamblin.

“We are really excited about the programme we’ve curated for this special night,” says London Surf / Film Festival Director Chris Nelson. “Litmus encapsulates the power of the surf movie. It helped inform the way many of us developed as surfers, the boards we rode, the evolution of the surfing lifestyle. You can’t fail to see the Litmus-effect in modern surf movie making. Then the opportunity to screen Peter Hamblin’s new project was just too good to miss. We hosted the UK Premier of Peter’s award-winning The Wright Side of Wrong at LS/FF in 2012 and were hugely excited by his filmmaking. With The Ripple Effect he’s kicked it up to a whole new level and we’re amped to be able to showcase this world premiere.”

This special event takes place on Tuesday 22^nd July at the iconic Riverside Studios in Hammersmith and is a must-attend event. A world premiere from critically acclaimed filmmaker Peter Hamblin, pre-eminent surf writer Tim Baker and Commissioning Editors Tom Howell and Evan Fontaine who have collaborated on an insightful and wry series of short films that lift the veil on some of surfing’s most interesting and engaging characters.

Focusing on the likes of media pioneers John and Paul Witzig, The Coolie Kids – from MP to Parko, Indo trailblazer Lance of Lance’s Right fame and Bob Hurley – toilet cleaner to industry leader, these characters have shaped the world of surfing as we know it.

Followed by a Q+A with Director Peter Hamblin and Commissioning Editor Evan Fontaine.
