Surfer Proposes while Riding the Severn Bore

Cornish surfer proposes to his girlfriend in a pretty unconventional way as he rode the Severn bore.

Proposals are usually a nerve-racking event, but adding into the mix a muddy wave – which could wash your ring (and dreams) away in a flash – must have intensified the situation.

This seemed to be no problem for 32-year-old surf instructor Pete Abell, the legend from King Surf Surf School in Mawgan Porth, as he rode the tidal bore with girlfriend Angie de Burgh.

Pete wasn’t without his concerns though and had sensibly used a plastic stunt ring for the actual act. Abell told the Daily MailIt it was very risky – so many things could have gone wrong, luckily we both managed to catch it [the wave] and stand up.”

Seconds after seeing that Angie had caught the wave I took the opportunity to get on one knee and luckily kept balance, she was absolutely clueless. She couldn’t believe it and thought I was joking – but she screamed, Yes.”

In the video posted on Youtube you can see Pete pull the ring out of his wetsuit to pop the question, to which Angie screams back ‘yes’.

The Bore is a special place for the couple who first met over a decade ago at Swansea university, but it wasn’t until they bumped into each other riding the bore three years ago that they first started dating.

The Severn was also the place where Pete’s father proposed to his mother on the banks during a full moon. It held even more sentiment as his father passed away three weeks ago. Pete had discussed his plans in the week before his father died.
