The Natty Surf Jam

We invite you to join us in support of The Natty Surf Jam, held at Fistral Beach on Saturday April 1st 2017

The event has been organised to commemorate the life of local surfer Nathaniel (Natty) Loney, who sadly took his own life last year after a long term battle with mental health related issues. All profits of the event will go towards supporting local mental health support charities; primarily The Invictus Trust and SOBS UK (Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide).

The goal of the event is to provide a ‘resource hub’ to gather as many local mental health support initiatives as possible with a common goal to provide options for those looking to get support and helpful information regarding their conditions. We are proud to be working alongside other amazing local mental health support initiatives, such as Wave Project, Newquay Community Orchard and Samaritans, who all offer a huge amount of support to our local community, and will be represented at Fistral Beach on the day.

There will also be various other activities to get involved in and spectate on the beach; primarily the longboard Surf competition, hosted by CS UK, which will have an open men’s and women’s division. The day will be kicking off early with the opening surf heats from 8.30am. This year we are excited to be hosting the likes of longboard world champion Ben Skinner, Adam ‘Bearman’ Griffiths, Jennifer Pendlebury and Emily Currie, to name but a few. It’s going to be a brilliant spectacle, and we expect to be drawing huge support from Newquay’s Surf community on the day.

We are also hosting an Expression Session during the afternoon which will be an informal, fun element of the competition, featuring the ‘April Fools Day Pirate Relay’; a fancy dress relay-style obstacle course, open for the general public to get involved in for the chance to win bonus prizes! We will also be hosting an open mini-comp for all surfers (not just longboarders) where entrants will have the opportunity to be awarded a prize for the ‘most radical manoeuvre’ on a Surfboard of their choice.

Other activities to expect on the day include Beach Yoga from Ocean Flow yoga, North Shore Brazilian Jui Jitsu demos, Fitness Classes sponsored by Koncept Gym, Raffle draws and live music at Fistral Beach Bar. Musicians on the day include female alt-folk outfit Velvet & Stone, Plymouth based singer/songwriter Jacob Riddall and Country-pop artist Clara Bond.

The days events will run from 8am until 4pm then we will move from the beach to Whiskers bar and venue for the sold out show and trophy presentations!

All in all, we believe that this event is set to be a fantastic day and we are really excited to see how much of an impact we can make on mental health awareness in the local community.
