On our Instagram account we’ve been doing a countdown of the 25 most-watched clips of 2022. For the top 10, which will get us to the dying embers of the year, we thought we’d dig a little deeper into the videos themselves.

It’s a peak behind the curtain on just why these slivers of surfing from 2022 proved so popular with the Wavelength faithful. You’re a strange bunch, sure, but you know your surfing, and you know what you like. And that’s what we love about ya.

No. 10: A Deadman’s Rollercoaster

Earnest Hemmingway wrote that catastrophes happen gradually, then suddenly. Gordon Dreyer can relate. After dealing with a ridiculously late drop at the Sydney wave of Deadmans in April, Dreyer looked in control. Till he wasn’t. Suddenly he was upside down, in the lip of a 10-foot slab, hurtling to the car-sized boulders that line the huge cliff in very close proximity.

Now we’ll be honest, we aren’t entirely sure of Gordon’s backstory. Heck, we don’t even know his front story. But that’s the beauty of Deadmans. In the last two years, it has asserted itself as one of the East Coast’s premier big wave slabs. Invariably, the best and biggest waves of the day have been ridden by complete unknowns. Despite being located at the beating heart of Australia’s biggest city, this wave, and its hardcore followers, remain somewhat of a mystery. And long may that continue.
