Early this week it was announced that the long awaited Andy Irons documentary finally has a premiere date, and now the official extended trailer for the film has dropped and it looks every bit as amazing as everyone hoped.

May 2nd 2018 will see doors of as an as yet unnamed cinema fling open and surf fans flood in to a dimly lit room with the intent of learning the true story behind one our sport’s most celebrated icons.

Here’s what Teton Gravity, the films creators, have said about it so far:

“This is the life story of three-time world champion surfer Andy Irons who died at age 32 from a heart attack with the secondary cause being an acute mixture of drugs. Andy and his brother, Bruce, came from humble beginnings on the small Hawaiian island of Kauai. The film chronicles Andy’s struggles with dyslexia, bipolar disease, self-medication, addiction, fame, success, and failure. Andy was a blue collar people’s champion who dealt with the same issues millions of people around the world struggle with every day. He died on November 2, 2010. His wife, Lyndie, was eight months pregnant with their son, Axel, at the time.”

“[This is]a film about bipolar disorder and opioid addiction as seen through the life of three-time world champion surfer Andy Irons. Andy was an incredible presence on the world stage as the “People’s Champion.” He was the pride of Hawaii and revered around the world for his rise to fame and success. However, many were unaware of his internal battles that led to his demise. As the opioid crisis rises to a national emergency in the United States, the untold story of Andy’s life serves to tear down the myths associated with these two ferocious diseases.”
