Well, here’s something you don’t hear about every day. A UK down-wind hydrofoiler has been bitten by a shark while off the coast of Fuerteventura over the weekend.
After attacking the man’s board, the shark bit the surfer’s leg, leaving puncture marks above his knee. He managed to scramble to shore where he was treated by local paramedics.
Authorities are now warning beachgoers to proceed with caution before returning to the water.

It’s understood the shark in question was an 8-foot Mako. Shark attacks are pretty rare off the Canaries, but sightings have been increasing as of late. Last year, a 31-year-old German woman died off the coast of the Canaries after a shark attack. The victim was travelling via a catamaran and decided to take a dip next to the boat. A shark took her leg and she suffered a heart attack.
The Canaries have often been coined Europe’s answer to Hawaii, with big, powerful swells setting off the coastline, especially around Lanzarote where El Quemao is akin to the North Shore’s Pipeline.
According to online sources, Mako attacks are extremely rare. The person in question is expected to make a full recovery.
