Veteran Surf Photographer Ben Selway’s Worst Ever Surf Trip

“When I first found out that I was getting fired from Wavelength Magazine, I couldn’t be less fussed. ‘Who cares?!’ I said to myself.

Sure, I’d miss the free holiday’s abroad, but I’d increasingly grown weary of being recognised, signing autographs and attending movie premieres with Dane Reynolds. Perhaps one day in the future the surf industry would need my services again? Greg Martin or Tim Nunn would invite me back to do a Selway Special Issue, “We’re doing a special project!” They’d say. “We need you.” But I would decline. “No thanks!

Every issue was a Selway Special. You might remember all of those interesting articles I produced and them being the key ingredient behind Wavelength’s success!” I think ultimately I felt used – like a haggard girl of the night. It was time to get a real job.

However, after a few years of working in a camping store (which included 20% off all items!) I rapidly grew bored and at the point I was about to get all depressed about missing Wavelength, Lewis Harrison-Pinder’s name pinged in my inbox asking me for a gritty 500 word tale for their 250th issue. I was elated!”
