WATCH: Locals Tame Barely Surfable Rio Slab

For years, Australia has hogged the limelight when it comes to the world’s craziest slabs.

There’s hundreds littered along its coastline and a dedicated crew, comprised mostly of underground chargers who regularly risk life and limb to surf them. However, in recent years, Brazil and more specifically Rio, has started to churn out a more regular stream of clips featuring new slabbing discoveries.

This shift follows a pattern that is materialising throughout surfing’s elite ranks. For the first time this year, Brazil has more men on tour than Australia (11-8), last year Brazilians won more events, both on the CT and on the QS  and since 2014, Brazil has picked up two world titles and Australia has nabbed zero.

Here’s a new clip featuring local boysPaulo Curi and Stephan Figueiredo attempting the (almost) impossible feat of surfing their super shallow discovery. Sure, they don’t look quite as well versed as their counterparts down under yet but perhaps, observing current trends, it’s only a matter of time.
