Wavelength Surf Magazine – since 1981

GALLERY: The Wavelength Surf Film Festival 2021 Goes Off!

Last weekend saw surf fans gather on the clifftops of Watergate Bay for a celebration of ride culture and good times at the Wavelength Surf Film Festival, presented by Goodrays & Arbor Skateboards.

With an eclectic lineup line up of international releases, plus food, drinks, live DJs and a mini ramp jam backed by a classic Cornish sunset, for us, it was the perfect way to round out the summer and we were stoked to welcome so many of you up there to enjoy it.

The day kicked off with the Royal Enfield Beach Hopper ride out – a chance for moto-enthusiasts to get together, shoot some shit and enjoy a raz around the Corish coastline ahead of the event. Upon their return, thirst was quenched with a complimentary coffee from Caravan and a free low alcohol beer from Lucky Saint, before the big screen lit up the skyline with the day’s first cinematic feature.

Attendees rolled out blankets and settled into the back of (or onto the roof of) elaborate van setups for the first half of our surf movie bonanza, featuring skate flicks from Santa Cruz and Arbor, a full-length surf and fishing film from Salty Crew and a new all-action banger from local boy Harry Timson. Then, some divine hip-wiggling from Brazil’s best loggers in Sambarama 3 followed by a special introduction from Matt Bromly to the UK Premiere of his new big wave odyssey, Over The Edge.

As the sun dipped towards the horizon, it was over to the festival village where a crew of frothers dropped in for the Arbor skate jam, while over by the bar, Henry Zyda spun bangers right the way through till sunset.

As night fell, Globe and Dion Agius’ Dark Hollow cut through the darkness with an array of trippy visuals and unparalleled progressive surfing. It was a treat to watch on the big screen, surrounded by booming audio and the hoots and hollers of a crowd suitably merry on Goodray’s Gin and Chronic.

In the headline slot was the critically acclaimed Water Get No Enemy, which is fresh off an international tour where it’s picked up a slew of audience choice awards and was met with similar adulation by WL crowd. Finally, it was left to Thank You Mother, featuring the smooth lines of Torren Martyn and the ruminations of Alby Falzon to play us out.

After a few more tunes and a bit of stomping in front of the bar, we called it a night, closing the curtain on another excellent summer of outdoor cinema.
