Heavy Water Tour Heading To Newcastle!

We’re halfway through our UK tour of Heavy Water, a new unflinching documentary featuring the life and times of Nathan Fletcher.

Directed by Michael Oblowitz, (who joined us at the London screening for a live recording of our podcast- which you can listen to here) the film serves as an intimate portrait of the youngest son of surfing’s most influential dynasty.

For those unversed in the Fletcher family tree, Nathan’s grandfather, Walter Hoffman, was one of the world’s original big wave surfers. His father was Herbie Fletcher, tow surfing pioneer and his older brother, Christian Fletcher, was a seminal force in the rise of aerial surfing. Using the lives of this prolific surfing family as a lens, Oblowitz offers deep insight into the birth of modern surfing’s most influential movements and the groundbreaking events that followed.

From the deaths of close friends Sion Milosky and Andy Irons, to incredible rides during the iconic 2011 Cloudbreak and Teahupoo Code Red swells, Nathan has been a central figure in some of the most historic surfing events of last two decades. The film plots a course through each of them, exploring the emotional impact of a life dedicated to dancing with life’s extremist states.

More than just a biopic, Heavy Water rounds out with an intense helicopter acid-drop attempt that underlines the enduring theme of the film; Nathan’s desire to push the limits, regardless of the cost.
So far the film has been enjoyed by packed out auditoriums in London, Bristol and Exeter and will head to Newquy, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Brighton over the coming week.
