Like all good events you often need a breather at the halfway point to review what has happened and look ahead to what is coming up.
Over the last 5 weeks we have had the pleasure of speaking to some truly inspirational surfers. All of which have their own unique, very positive, and relatable relationships with surfing and have used this to inspire some big and amazing things.
1. Richard Walker – MD of Iceland
Summary: There is no doubt that Richard is an outdoor enthusiast. In this conversation he tells stories of global surf adventures and pioneering mountain ascents. All of this links back to his day to day life in a very positive way as he realises that his playground (the outdoors) is under threat due to environmental challenges. From his unique position of running his family owned Iceland Foods Supermarket, which turns over a cool £3.4billion, he is able to have an incredible global impact as an environmentalist in a quest to protect what he loves.
2. Andy Medd – Founder of Mother
Summary: Andy is an all round gent who has humbly created one of the worlds most well respected creative agencies by remaining ‘fiercely independent’. This doesn’t happen overnight nor without blood, sweat and tears. But fuelling the fire for Andy was trips to the beach and surfs with his family in Sennen Cove, Hossegor and further afield.
3. Hugo Tagholm – CEO of SAS
Summary: Surfers Against Sewage is globally recognised as one of the leading environmental campaigners. Hugo is the driving force behind this and takes plenty of inspiration from his daily dosage of sea views and time in the water. His views on the impact of C19 are well worth a listen.
4. Rob Love – Founder of Crowdfunder
Summary: The story of a serial entrepreneur. Rob has insisted on basing his companies on the beach and explains how surfing has helped build a very productive culture within Crowdfunder, helping raise nearly £100m for ideas that have an incredibly positive impact. This is the one you will want to share with your boss… Or, you will immediately find yourself on their jobs page to see if they are hiring (Oh, and they are… https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/about-us/jobs)
5. Tim Conibear – Founder of W4C
Summary: In this episode Tim and Jim highlight the power of surf. Not only from a charity perspective but also on a very personal level. Surfing has a very positive impact both mentally and physically and Tim has managed to change thousands of lives across Africa and closer to home with his own mental health troubles. Surfing can be a great escape for anyone and in this conversation you begin to understand how far its impact can go.
Looking ahead we have some more very special guests from world champions both male and female who have done as much out of the water as in. We also talk to a doctor who flips his life on his head to save lives across Indonesia after realising the reality behind paradise palm tree curtains.
One of the main objectives of this campaign has been to inspire people during a very strange period which links well to Jims company strapline Keep Your Chin Up #KYCU. We hope you have enjoyed all the episodes so far.
Thank you to all those who have sent some inspired messages in response to various episodes!
