Mark ‘Egor’ Harris, Scotland – The Best British Barrel In Association With Korev

We’re now five entries deep into our shortlist for the Best British Barrel. So far we’ve seen entries from Ritchie Mullins and Nic Von Rupp from England and Taz Knight and Noah Lane from the Scottish coastline and now we’ve got another to add to the latter category, featuring Mark ‘Egor’ Harris in a crazy no-hands backhand drainer.

Mark ‘Egor’ Harris has been a major part of British surfing in one way or another for more than a decade. He’s enjoyed national competitive success, pioneered some of Britain’s heaviest waves, and now spends his time travelling around Europe presenting the upcoming ‘Endless Winter II‘ documentary’.

This clip also featured in Mr B’s ‘Substance’ during one of many trips up north. Here’s what Egor told us about the session:

“I am reckoning this was 8 years ago, at the end of April whilst the cold water comp was on at Thurso. I was telling Russ Winter about Baggies as we had only just started surfing her and he was buzzing . Russ had just scored his mental one at Teahuppoo and as we paddled out he was saying ‘it’s just like a mini chopes bowl!’
It was a long period swell and there were long waits in between sets . Russ decided to go in as he had a heat at Thurso coming up. As he got out on to the reef this perfect set came in and I was the only person in the line up , and when you see lines out the back at a slab like Baggies and you’re the only person in the line up your adrenaline kicks in a bit!

I positioned myself and took off right behind the bowl- my backhand tube riding was not the best and I was still learning, so my instinct was to chuck my arms out into the full swooping eagle which I did through the whole barrel, not the most common technique and old school style but it felt right and good!
I remember seeing russ in the reef with his arms in the air and I was buzzing, such a fun wave but for some reason the Bagpipe does not narwal like it used to anymore, hopefully she gets back to her old ways as it’s such a fun wave and would be a shame for the younger generations not experience it. I have never surfed a wave like Bagpipes really,such a backdoor bowl in a very small space, intense and very fun.”
