This weekend sees leaders of seven of the world’s economic superpowers convene at sunny Carbis Bay in St Ives for the G7 Summit.
Conversations will take place on a range of topics, with the global response to Coronavirus, climate change and international trade all coming high on the agenda.
While all the official proceedings will take place behind closed doors, there are plenty of alternative events, including talks, film screenings and workshops, happening around the county and online, that joe public can attend. Most focus squarely on the extensive threats posed by climate change with activists, academics and business leaders coming together to shine a light on the issues and lay out ideas for how we can all work together to solve them.
Here we’ve pulled together a programme of some of the most interesting happenings that you can get involved with.

World Oceans Day Sustainable Growth Conference – 8th June
Hosted by the Cornwall Chamber Of Commerce, this online conference will demonstrate how Cornwall is working towards a more sustainable future by leading change in agritech, education, health, energy, and inequality reduction.
Following introductions from Eden Project Founder Sir Tim Smit, HRH Prince Charles and the Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor Sir Patrick Vallance, the event will feature a range of keynotes and breakout workshops focussed on helping individuals and businesses meet the challenges of the day and build a better future.

Finisterre presents Sea 7 Ocean Activist Camp – 10th June
Hosted by Finisterre, this online event will bring together leading activists, scientists and change makers to equip us all with the knowledge required to aid in the protection of our oceans.
Through talks and panel discussion the event will identify and debate seven key issues affecting the health of our seas, from climate change and plastic pollution to ocean recovery and run a series of online activist workshops giving you the tools you need to stand up for these issues.

16:15 – How to be an Effective Ocean Activist with Emily Penn.
Emily is a sailor, ocean advocate and artist dedicated to studying environmental challenges in the most remote parts of our planet. Join her here as she shares tips to help you unlock your inner ocean activist.
17:30- Ocean as Climate Solution with Kevin Whilden and Michael Stewart.
Join the SeaTrees team to learn why the ocean is our most vital resource when it comes to tackling climate change. You’ll learn about blue carbon ecosystems – seagrass, kelp, mangroves & coral reefs – and the incredible impact they have in terms of protecting our coastlines from extreme weather, drawing down carbon, creating biodiversity hotspots & enabling local communities to build sustainable livelihoods.
18:55 – Ocean Insight with Johnny Briggs, Anupa Asokan, Prof. Callum Roberts.
This Ocean Insight session will bring together three different viewpoints on how effective policy can protect our most vital marine ecosystems.
The speakers will discuss the 30×30 campaign, and the Global Ocean Alliance – a 43 country strong alliance, led by the UK. Its aim is to protect at least 30% of the global ocean in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) by 2030.
18:55 – Ocean Activist Workshop with James Honeyborne
James Honeyborne, Creative Director of Freeborne Media, has worked as an executive producer at the BBC Natural History Unit working on some 35 films with multiple co-producers around the world.
His projects include the Emmy Award and BAFTA-winning series Blue Planet II, the Emmy Award-nominated series Wild New Zealand with National Geographic (U.S. TV channel), and the BAFTA-winning BBC1 series Big Blue Live with PBS.
James will share his journey and advice on how best to use storytelling as a force for good.

G7 Fringe curated by Crowdfunder, C-Space & Real Ideas – 11th-13th June
Hosted in C-Space – our Newquay HQ – and online, The G7 Fringe will set out to tackle the big questions of our time and come up with actions we can all take to make a positive difference.
Through a series of talks, film screenings and interviews the event promises to introduce the audience to a wide range of ideas from community leaders, quirky entrepreneurs, global leaders, creatives and activists.

11th June – 19.00 A live discussion with Seaspiracy director Ali Tabrizi and a group of other marine activists around the complex issues of ocean conservation and climate change.
11th June – 13.00 A screening of ‘Our Planet: Too Big To Fail’, a film by Emmy® Award-winning Silverback Films and WWF, exploring the risks of inaction, the impact of investing-as-usual, and the critical role that green investments can play in the fight for our world.
12th June – 17.00 ‘The World is not Enough’ will bring together a unique collection of people to discuss how collaborations between, governments, charities, brands, social media platforms, foundations and of course the public can come together to make change happen faster. The panel will include representatives from Crowdfunder, Real Ideas, UNICEF, the National Emergencies Trust, Comic Relief, The Gates Foundation, the Black Global Trust and more.

Surfers Against Sewage Protest Paddle Out – June 12th
SAS are inviting surfers, kayakers, SUPs and swimmers to join them for a protest paddle out on Saturday, June 12th at Gyllyngvase Beach, Falmouth.
“It’s time to send a message to the world leaders attending the G7 Summit. We are facing ocean and climate emergency and drastic action needs to happen now,” reads the event bio.
“The 2021 G7 Summit is a critical opportunity for leading governments to set the tone for how the world rebuilds from the coronavirus pandemic. As we reach a pivotal moment in tackling the climate crisis, it is vital that the decisions made at the Summit focus on a need for a green and blue recovery.”
