Listen: “I Think I Deserve A (BWT) Spot, I’ve Given It My Best, I’ve Been On Every Swell”

Did you help lock down London Town on the Extinction Rebellion protest lately?

We sure hope so.

Do you dump unnecessary plastic packaging plastic at the Tesco check out in attempt to help clean our seas?

Right on brothers and sisters. Right on.

Now we need to call upon your activism once again, for another very worthy cause.

We need you to help lobby the World Surf League to give Nic von Rupp a wildcard spot for the 2019 Big Wave Tour.

We caught up for the German/Portuguese gnarl lord last week in Santa Cruz, Portugal to get the inside story on his game-changing Mav’s lefts sessions this winter with the likes of Lucas Chumbo, Kai Lenny, Nathan Florence and Koa Rothman for the latest episode of It’s Not The Length Podcast.

Nic told us the edit he just dropped was basically like his resumé to present to the committee who decide upon the 5 WSL Performance Wildcards for the Big Wave Tour.

The panel of esteemed big wave buffs including Parsons, Sharp, Mel et al. have a lot of gnarly chargers to choose from, of course, but c’mon now.

Watch Nic’s clip and it’s pretty hard to argue that he doesn’t merit a spot.

“They know who’s charging, and who’s not,” reckons Nico of the BWT kingmakers. “I really wanna get on that tour.”

“I feel more comfortable taking off under it, deep and steep…”

“Mav’s left is a big slab, a 20ft slab. That’s what my surfing is about… I feel more comfortable taking off under it, deep and steep than taking the drop on a massive wave. That’s where I hope I can translate my surfing from slabs to big waves.”

“We had a couple session where it was big last winter, and we just had this vibe going between the crew, hucking it under that lip, taking big sets on the head. It takes a few people to give you that killer instinct, and that’s what happened that one afternoon.

“I think I deserve a spot (on the BWT), I’ve been on every swell, I’ve given it my best. I was one of the guys who was most out at Nazaré. The clip, it’s kind of a statement, let the big dogs judge if I deserve it or not (laughs)…”
