Listen: “It Scared The Sh*t Outta Me”

By their very nature, invitational events tend to be held in high quality surf, and Quemao Class, held at the infamous Pipe-style wave El Quemao on the north coast of Lanzarote is no exception.

When Storm Brendan sent XXL swell pulsing to all corners of Europe last week, prompting a very near green light on the Nazaré Tow Challenge, the energy propagated far enough south to light up Quemao with arguably the best conditions ever for the event.

Basque former CT ripper and tube specialist Aritz Aranburu took out the win, with Adrien Toyon, Geroid McDaid and Natxo Gonzalez also making the final in delectable conditions.

Wavelength’s It’s Not The Length podcast Ep 12 caught up with Toyon for his inside take on things. In a nutshell: Beautiful, but scary.

“The wave is fucken sick, man” gushed Toyon, “it scared the shit out of me. It’s the best waves I’ve ever had for a contest in my life, besides Pipeline.”

For Adrien’s full debrief on the first – and very likely finest, surf-wise – finest Euro event of the year, in check out the latest episode of the pod via your phone’s pod app, iTunes, or wherever you normally get your audio on demand.
