WATCH: Dylan Graves & A Portuguese Novelty Ferry Wave

There was a moment there, where professional surfing all got a bit serious.

It was all ‘Laird pushing limits’ and earnest Mike Parsons voice-overs. You had to ride a short pointy thruster, regardless of wave quality or personal ability. Those at the helm wanted the sport of surfing to be ‘legitimate’, or put more eloquently ‘a dumb wanna-be tennis tour.’

And then, slowly something started to switch. It turned out that along with a dose of sincerity, surf fans were all in for a bit of absurdity too. A bit of silliness among all of the pre-heat-headphone-focus-sessions and high-performance edits. And suddenly, a glorious new dawn; the sun rising to reveal JOB surfing down a storm drain, rock-strewn Mason Ho edits, Catchsurf foamies in heavy shoreys and Ben Gravy’s youtube.

And in 2020 professional surfing’s stalwarts of the absurd are revered as ever.

Here’s ep 3 of your favourite web series Weird Waves, where a petrol shortage, a ferry wake and a frothing Portuguese middle-ager converge to create the most entertaining web clip we’ve seen in ages (or at least since the last ep of weird waves).
